8.5 × 11 in (US letter) is the usual trim size for coloring books on KDP. KDP paperbacks can be up to 8.5 in wide and 11.69 in tall, so letter size uses KDP's full maximum width at proportions buyers already know — more room per drawing than any of the common smaller trims.
Why 8.5 x 11 in specifically
KDP's paperback trim range runs from small novel sizes up to a custom width of 8.5 in and height of 11.69 in. Within that range, 8.5 × 11 in — US letter — is the largest page you can get at familiar proportions, which is why page-filling content such as workbooks, activity books, and coloring books gravitates to it. Smaller "regular" trims (6 × 9 in, 5 × 8 in, and similar) are built for running text, where a narrower column and more pages are normal; a full-page line drawing loses real size and detail when it's shrunk into one of those.
| Trim size | Typical use | Coloring book fit |
|---|---|---|
| 8.5 × 11 in | Workbooks, activity books, coloring books | Usual choice — KDP's full maximum width, most room per drawing among common trims |
| 6 × 9 in | Novels, running text | Works but shrinks art and safe margins |
| 5 × 8 in | Novels, pocket-size | Not practical for full-page line art |
300 DPI: 2550 × 3300 px · safe margin 0.375 in = 113 px
What "8.5 x 11 in at 300 DPI" means in pixels
At the 300 DPI KDP recommends for interior images, an 8.5 × 11 in page is 2550 × 3300 px. Every full-page drawing in the interior file needs to be generated or exported at that pixel size (or larger) for the page to meet that recommendation — see the DPI guide for the resolution math and the safe-margins guide for how much of that page art actually reaches.
The trade-off against smaller trims
A smaller trim isn't wrong, but it changes what buyers get. At 6 × 9 in, the same line art has to be scaled down or redrawn to fit, and the outer and gutter margins — which are fixed inch amounts, not a percentage of the page — eat a larger share of a smaller sheet. For most coloring book categories (kids', adult, large-print), buyers expect a page they can actually work on with markers or colored pencils; 8.5 × 11 in delivers that without any per-book size decision.
Where trim size does not matter
Trim size does not change the gutter band (that's set by interior page count only — see the gutter guide) and it does not change the 300 DPI KDP recommends. It does change the pixel dimensions every page needs to hit, and it sets the outer safe margin's share of usable space. CrayonMill's tools currently build to 8.5 × 11 in only; a different trim needs a separate workflow for now.
