What is the minimum page count for a KDP paperback?

KDP requires a 24-page interior PDF minimum for any paperback, coloring books included. Single-sided books count blank backs toward that total, so 12 art pages already technically clear it — but a 24-page book is thin, and most published coloring books run well past the minimum for both shelf presence and price.

Why 12 drawings is the technical floor, not the practical one

A single-sided coloring book — one drawing per sheet, the back left blank so marker or paint doesn't bleed through — has an interior PDF with twice as many pages as it has drawings. 12 drawings produce a 24-page interior: exactly KDP's minimum. That's a real, working number, but it describes the smallest file KDP will accept, not a book most buyers would pay for. A 12-drawing book is thinner than almost anything on a coloring-book shelf and has little room to price above the printing cost.

Double-sided books need more drawings to reach the same floor

Double-sided books (art on both sides of the sheet) don't get the blank-back doubling, so interior page count equals art page count directly. A double-sided book needs 24 drawings to clear the same minimum that a single-sided book clears with 12. This is one of the trade-offs in the single-sided vs. double-sided decision — see that guide for the rest.

What the minimum is actually checking

KDP's manuscript requirements set 24 interior pages as the floor for a paperback across trim sizes and paper types. It's a binding and printing constraint: a book much thinner than that doesn't hold together the same way in perfect-bound printing, and the fixed costs of printing a very short run don't scale down cleanly. The check runs against the finished interior PDF's page count, not against any count entered elsewhere in the KDP submission form — so a mismatch between what the metadata claims and what the file actually contains is caught during processing rather than accepted at face value.

Where the minimum sits relative to typical coloring books

Most published kids' coloring books run 24–60 pages; most adult ones run 40–100 (see the full page-count guide for the reasoning behind those ranges). The 24-page minimum sits at the very bottom of the kids' range and below where most adult books start — useful to know as a hard floor, but not a starting point for planning a book.

Questions

Does the 24-page minimum count blank pages?

Yes. KDP counts the interior PDF's total page count, and a single-sided coloring book's blank backs are pages in that PDF.

How many drawings does a single-sided book need to reach 24 pages?

12. Each drawing plus its blank back makes 2 interior pages, so 12 drawings produce a 24-page interior — the floor.

Is 24 pages a good page count for a coloring book, or just the legal floor?

It's the floor, not a target. A 24-page book is thin on shelf and on value; most published coloring books run well above it (see the page-count guide).
